Acer launched its first Chromebook optimized for cloud gaming this week. The Acer Chromebook 516 GE offers instant access to full cloud-powered PC and console games.

The news was announced by Google, which also announced two rival gaming Chromebooks: the Asus Chromebook Vibe CX55 Flip and Lenovo’s Ideapad Gaming Chromebook. However, neither announced local availability, while Acer said the Chromebook 516 GE would arrive in South Africa in Q1 2023.

NVIDIA GeForce Now’s highest level of performance streams games at 1600p and 120 frames per second, with advanced graphics features like ray tracing.

To amplify these new graphics, the Chromebook is powered by up to 12th Gen Intel Core i7 P-series processors for responsive performance and video decoding technology, ideal for cloud gaming. It comes with 16GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 256GB of PCIe NVMe SSD storage to further increase responsiveness.

Its ultra-smooth high-resolution WQXGA (2560×1600) IPS display at 120Hz enables high-frame-per-second gameplay, while its 16-inch narrow-bezel display and 16:10 aspect ratio bring life to life. to immersive visuals.

DTS audio delivers high-quality sound without distortion from two upward-firing speakers and two downward-firing speakers. Unwanted sonic vibrations are also eliminated by force-cancelling woofers that project in opposite directions.

The gaming keyboard features anti-ghosting technology to record fast and accurate keyboard inputs and key combinations. The keyboard also offers vibrantly colored preset backlight color modes to add excitement to gaming. Users can choose from one of seven colors or a 4-zone preset color option.

Other features include a 9-hour battery, a glare-reducing Full HD webcam with temporal noise reduction technology, and dual microphones complement the quad speakers.

Price and availability

The Acer Chromebook 516 GE laptop will be available in South Africa in Q1 2023, starting at R20,000 excluding VAT.
