Automatic hair curler promises the “perfect curl” at the push of a button

The latest beauty gadget claims it can create the perfect curl with the press of a button. But is it really effective?

Conair’s Unbound Cordless Automatic Hair Curler has earned a good reputation on TikTok. This is a portable, cordless and rechargeable automatic hair curler that is supposed to make styling your hair easier.

Watch In The Know’s Lisa Azcona test the Unbound Styler against a traditional curling wand to see if it lives up to the hype.

“Before I start, I will first adjust the settings on the screen. You can switch between three different heat settings, four different timers, and choose the direction of the curl,” says Lisa.

The Unbound works best with smaller sections if you have long hair like Lisa. You’ll also want to make sure to use heat protectant and detangle your hair before diving.

Lisa placed a section of her hair in the Unbound curler to kick things off.

“Once it’s there, press the start button to start curling,” she explained. “And it should be held continuously until you hear the timer go off with two quick beeps. Release the ‘start’ button and pull the curler down to reveal the curl.

Although she was a little intimidated by the device at first, she was surprised with the results. After the Unbound released her lock of hair, it unrolled into an immaculate curl.

“Oh my God, look at that loop. It’s literally perfect. It’s bouncy. I am shaken,” she said.

But in the end, the classic wand always felt more versatile for its long locks.

“My hair didn’t get caught in there, thank goodness,” she said. “But I think you need a lot of patience for this tool; it takes a bit of time. I feel like it created a much tighter loop than I would generally prefer. When I tried looping larger sections it didn’t work very well.

Lisa said the product might work better for shorter hair or for people who want a specific look. The traditional curling wand was more customizable, allowing it to make tight, loose, or wavy curls, while the Unbound instead had a one-size-fits-all standard curl.

“I didn’t necessarily feel the same sense of freedom with the automatic curler,” Lisa explained. “Overall, I could see myself using it again. I’m not the best at curling my hair with a curling wand, so this tool really comes in handy.
