Cowboys WR Amari Cooper tests positive for COVID-19, will miss two games

FRISCO – Cowboys wide receiver Amari Cooper will miss the next two games, including Sunday’s against the Kansas City Chiefs, after testing positive for COVID-19.

Cooper was placed on the reserve / COVID-19 list on Friday. He is required to spend a minimum of 10 days away from the team because he is not vaccinated, a source said. That ensures he won’t play Thanksgiving next Thursday against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Cooper, a quadruple Pro Bowler, spent the first three-plus seasons of his career with the Oakland Raiders before Dallas acquired him mid-season in 2018 for a first-round pick in 2019. Those next two games represented a sort of reunion for the ex-AFC West standout.

Sadly, the development of the weekend leaves the coaching staff with relatively little time to adjust before a potential offensive shootout at Arrowhead Stadium. CeeDee Lamb believed he was heavily involved in the slot machine with Cooper and Michael Gallup mainly on the outside.

While Lamb could still work in the slot on occasion, many of those reps should go to wide receiver Cedrick Wilson instead. Wilson (shoulder) only played one snap in last Sunday’s 43-3 win over the Atlanta Falcons in a gadget red zone subset in which Wilson was lined up at quarterback . He has been a full participant in training this week.

The Cowboys (7-2) held a tour on Friday. They are due to practice Saturday before their afternoon flight to Kansas City.

Cooper, 27, appeared in each of the team’s first nine games despite a lingering hamstring injury, totaling 44 catches for 583 yards and five touchdowns. If his recovery from COVID-19 goes as hoped, he will return in time to face the New Orleans Saints on December 2.

Even if he was fully vaccinated, Cooper would have been challenged to face the Raiders on Thanksgiving. He should have tested negative consecutively in two tests carried out at least 24 hours apart while he was asymptomatic. Its vaccination status reinforces its unavailability.

Three Cowboys players are listed as questionable to play on Sunday: left tackle Tyron Smith (ankle), cornerback Kelvin Joseph (personal reason) and cornerback Nahshon Wright (hamstrings). Joseph is not supposed to play.

Smith is expected to start on Sunday as long as he practices Saturday without any setbacks, coach Mike McCarthy said on Friday. Terence Steele would start on left tackle for a third straight week if Smith is out. La’el Collins nevertheless appears in pencil on the right tackle.
