After it was accidentally put on sale by UK retailer Argos and a full spec sheet leaked, DJI has now officially unveiled the latest drone in its Mini range.
The Mini 3 Pro is a bit different from its predecessors, and that’s really why it’s a Pro model and not just the Mini 3.
Two major features that the series previously lacked – obstacle avoidance and auto-tracking – are now present, and the camera has received a significant boost with a larger sensor and faster f/1.7 lens .
Although it doesn’t have a 1-inch sensor like the DJI Air 2S, the Mini 3 Pro maintains a takeoff weight of less than 250g. This is important because it means there is no requirement to register the drone in the US and other countries (not the UK, unfortunately), so buyers can charge it up and fly without training or other administrative formalities.
The Mini 3 Pro can now record video at up to 4K60, but only up to 4K30 if you also want the footage to be HDR.
Significantly, the redesigned gimbal can rotate 90° to record video in portrait mode. It is mainly for those who want to post the images on TikTok and other shorthand social media.
Obstacle avoidance is available through forward, downward and backward sensors, and allows the Mini 3 Pro to avoid hitting objects such as trees. It can also do this by automatically flying in different modes, including when using ActiveTrack. This keeps a subject in the middle of the frame as it moves.
We’ve reviewed the Mini 3 Pro, so you can learn more about how it flies and how good the videos and photos are.
If you want to buy one, there are a few options. This time around, DJI is selling the drone on its own for those who already have a compatible remote. But if you don’t, you can opt for a more expensive set that comes with the RC-N1 remote.
The flagship pack includes an all-new remote control with an integrated 5.5-inch touchscreen, so you don’t have to use your own phone.
You can pre-order a Mini 3 Pro from DJI’s website immediately, but it won’t go on sale until May 17.
There is also a Fly More pack but unlike before this does not include the drone. This is a separate accessory set that includes a shoulder bag, two standard batteries, a three-battery charger, and two sets of extra propellers. It costs £159 / US$189.
