Google decided to close Stadia in early 2023 only after 3 years

Whereas Google Stadia has never set foot in Malaysia, it’s still quite shocking to learn from Google that the streaming game platform will close. It was only after it went live in 2019 that the company decided to halt the project due to lack of traction with users.

With the move, Google will refund all Stadia hardware purchases made through the Google Store. This also includes all purchases of games and add-on content from the Stadia Store. Each refund is expected to be completed by mid-January 2023 and Stadia servers will cease by January 18, 2023.

For those unaware, the concept of Google Stadia allows gamers to play video games through the online cloud. This means that even without a particular game console at hand, you will still be able to play a video game on your phone, PC, laptop or TV through Stadia servers. On paper, this is a wonderful idea, but it also means that high internet speed is required. Stadia is also not available in many countries like Malaysia.

Google said Stadia could be applied to other platforms such as YouTube, Google Play, and augmented reality (AR), as well as industry partners for the future of gaming. I guess Google Stadia was just ahead of its time due to high bandwidth limitations in several countries. Stay tuned for more tech news at
