FARGO – If you’ve met Cody Mauch then you understand all the hard work he’s done over the past five years.
“If you hold it, and the longer I held it, the better it turned out.”
Simple words, but they mean so much to Mauch. The Hankinson native transformed his body to become an American tackle for the Bison.
Two years ago, Mauch was a replacement, getting calls for gadgets for him. In the 2019 FCS semi-finals against Montana State, Mauch’s number was called up on a two-point conversion.
“We had the play call for a while. I’m glad we waited until the semi-finals. I had a little party in mind, but I was maimed by everyone, everyone was getting crazy on the sidelines. ” Mauch said.
The time to start for Mauch came last spring after several Bison linemen left. He was a little worried.
“I was nervous every game in the spring. I had my first starts, then it was the fall, and I just wanted to perfect my art afterwards.
After a rough start, Mauch started on left tackle for the last 21 games. Along the way, he added another skill. Make sure the opponent knows when NDSU has a first down.
“It started out making fun of people. But then we became those people. We’re all in it and love to see it do it every time.” NDSU senior defensive end Logan McCormick said.
“I’ve been having fun with that lately, I’m glad they’ve got it on camera. I’m right there, it’s happening in the heat of the moment.”
When asked if there had been any premature celebrations, Mauch got the perfect answer:
“I’m definitely checking to make sure I don’t want to look like an idiot there.”
