IKEA Mobile Checkout: which stores have the new technology, how it works

IKEA will introduce a major change for shoppers across Australia – with some stores introducing it ahead of the busy Christmas season.

Shoppers at IKEA Queensland stores will have the opportunity to use new technology that the Swedish furniture giant says will cut checkout wait times before Christmas.

Mobile checkout technology – which allows customers to scan products on their phones and pay on exit without having to unpack their cart – will be rolled out in IKEA Logan and North Lakes stores ahead of the busy Christmas shopping season.

The technology is then scheduled to be rolled out to all Australian stores in 2022.

Christian Becker, IKEA’s country customer manager, said the initiative made shopping easier.

He said it takes an average of six minutes to queue and unload and reload items.

“Our colleagues can now also support more customers where their help is needed most, which is very important during the busy Christmas shopping season,” he said.

“Our goal is to provide our customers with a consistent, transparent and efficient shopping experience across all channels.

“Swap-based checkout is a first for home furnishings retailers in Australia, and we are proud to lead the way with this initiative in order to create a no-wait checkout experience for our customers. “

Shoppers can activate the new feature by downloading the IKEA app or scanning the QR code in store.
