PS5 stock – live: latest console restocking news from Game, AO, John Lewis and more

All the right people! We’re closing the blog shop for tonight, but as a farewell gift we’re sharing a few stats that just highlight how great December has been in terms of restocking so far. Before that, the PS5 is still in stock if you haven’t bought one yet.

We love the numbers, especially when it comes to the PS5 stock. While we still have a day left in December, it has been the best month for restocking since the release of the PS5. There have been 53 declines so far in December, improving on the previous high of 36 in August.

Unsurprisingly, Game has had the most restocking (with the retailer’s consoles having been in stock for eight straight days now). The game is followed (surprisingly this time) by Currys, who had eight restockings this month, and then BT with five.

As we’re sure you all know by now, Sony makes two versions of the PlayStation 5. The PS5 digital edition is priced at £ 349.99, while the standard PS5, which includes a disc drive, is priced at 449. £ 99. The latter is the same as the Xbox Series X, while the less powerful Xbox S series (which also lacks a disc drive) is lower than the digital PS5, at £ 249 (but is also significantly less powerful than the digital edition PS5).

Many retailers, including Game, Very, Argos, ShopTo and As Studio, like to sell their PS5 stock in batches. This often means spending more but getting extras like a second controller, a selection of games and other accessories. Bundles tend to be easier to obtain, but you’ll end up spending more money than buying the console on its own.

Only bundles are in stock at AO and Game at this time.

If you’re sitting there right now, staring at your stack of PS4 games, wondering if they’ll play on your new PS5. Don’t worry, they sure will!

If you have the Disc Editing Console, all that blood, sweat and tears that end these campaigns will not have been wasted because you will be able to insert your PS4 discs and play them just fine on the PS5. However, only PS4 games purchased from PlayStation Store will work on the Digital Edition console. Why? Well, because you’re going to try to insert a disc into a nonexistent hole and, well, that’s not a good idea.

Most PS4 games have enjoyed generous price cuts since the release of the PS5, so it’s worth reading our roundup of the best PS4 games to buy right now.

PlayStation Direct uses an invitation system to launch the PS5, similar to BT, inviting some lucky PSN users to buy the console before everyone else. Stock usually goes live around 8 a.m. and then the retailer opens orders for everyone around 10 a.m. But how do you get an invitation?

It’s an extremely vague process, and we’re not very familiar with the mechanics of how the PlayStation Direct invitation system works. As far as we know, the main requirement is that you need a PSN account. You probably need to be a bit network active i.e. playing games on your PS4 to get an invite as well.

Other than that, it seems to be completely hit and miss. We’ve already seen people with a PS5 being asked to buy the console, although they clearly don’t need it. We expect another PlayStation Direct restock to take place during the first week of January.

You know, when you’re in that interim period between Boxing Day sales and January sales and it all comes together? Yes, that’s where we are right now. This is good for us because it means that the price drop continues over and over again.

The hunt for the PS5 at a retailer offering overnight delivery is real. If you’re as excited as we are for a next-gen console and don’t want to wait weeks for a bundle to arrive at Game, we recommend purchasing the Xbox Series X.
